Summary:
“THE TANTRUM THAT SAVED THE WORLD” is a remarkable, award-winning children’s book by Australian writer and illustrator, Megan Herbert, and renowned climate scientist, Michael E. Mann, about a little girl who stares down the climate crisis and channels tantrum power into positive action to save the world.
The book consists of three parts. The first part is a story about a little girl who inherits a huge problem she didn’t ask for, feels all kinds of frustration as she tries to solve it, and then channels those strong emotions into positive action, inspiring all those around her to do the same. The second part explains the science of climate change to children in language they can understand, telling the stories of the climate refugees that appear in the story, and how all their lives are interconnected. An Action Plan then outlines simple and positive actions every person can take to make a real difference and to become the heroes of their own stories.
Fully funded on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in 2017 in just 5 days, the book was originally self-published by Megan Herbert’s independent press, World Saving Books. Its launch garnered attention from high-profile celebrity environmentalists, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Klein, Bill Nye, and Bill McKibben, to name just a few, who all praised the book and its message.
The book won a 2018 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award and its authors were jointly awarded the 2019 Louis J. Battan Author’s Award K-12 by the American Meteorological Society.
The book was published in Italian, Korean and Turkish editions in 2019.
In Spring of 2022, the book will be re-released in a new edition, published by North Atlantic Books, and distributed by Penguin Random House.
